Introduction

The Glens and Kirriemuir Old Congregation was formed in 1999 with the Union of Kirriemuir Old Parish and the Glens.

In October 2006, the Congregation has approximately 1200 members and serves a Parish that stretches from the centre of Kirriemuir to the head Jock’s Road in the Grampians and includes the Glens of Prosen, Clova, Doll, Quiech and Moy as well as the communities of Cortachy, Dykehead and Memus.

The Congregation maintains regular worship in 4 sanctuaries: Kirriemuir Old, Cortachy, Memus and Prosen.

In the past three years the Congregation has steadily deepened its links with neighbours the Isla Parishes and Eassie and Nevay l/w Newtyle. The three congregations have formed the West Angus Area Ministry and are waiting for Presbytery to agree the formation of a Parish Grouping.

The ministry of the Congregation is led by the Rev Malcolm Rooney and the Rev Linda Stevens, supported by a paid full time Administrator, Mrs Anne Pole, part time Administrator, Mrs Emily Wright, and a pastoral visitor who works 30 hours per week, Mrs Christine Rooney.  The paid team is supported by very strong teams of volunteers

The Rev Malcolm Rooney is the Parish Minister.  A secondary school teacher for 16 years, Malcolm has been in Kirriemuir since 1993.  He served as Clerk to the Presbytery of Angus for 8 years from 1997 and is now one of the Presbytery’s Pastoral Advisers.  In addition, he led the national Area Team Ministry project for three years and is now a member of the Executive of the Ministries Council and leads the Council’s Communications Task Group.

Malcolm feels very well settled in Kirriemuir and is committed to spending the rest of his ministry in the Glens and Kirriemuir Old.  He is particularly appreciative of the support of the office bearers and members of the congregation.

The Rev Linda Stevens spent 15 months as a Student Minister in the Glens and Kirriemuir Old and was Ordained in January 2006 as Team Minister in the West Angus Area Ministry based in the Glens and Kirriemuir Old.  A mathematics graduate, before entering the ministry Linda devoted her life to looking after her family as well as doing voluntary work.  During her student training she completed the Certificate in Counselling Skills and is currently studying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling.

In terms of ethos the Congregation believes that God is relevant seven days a week, 24 hours a day and is guided by a vision statement seeking to practise the presence of God by following Jesus Christ. The ethos of the Congregation places relationships at the core of its ministry and it is guided by Micah 6:8 And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. The Congregation seeks to develop relationships with God, with those who are closest and with the wider world.
