The Congregation of the Glens and Kirriemuir Old Parish
Church is part of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland and serves a mixed
Rural and Town Congregation which includes the north half of the town of
Kirriemuir, Cortachy, Memus and the Angus Glens of Prosen, Moy, Clova and
Doll. There are some 1250 members in the Congregation and five Worship
Sanctuaries.
The Parish lies in an area 20 to 35 miles north of Dundee and includes some of the best scenery in Scotland with stunning views of the Grampians to the north and the Glens of Prosen, Moy, Clova and Doll, and the valley of Strathmore to the South, East and West. By tradition the main source of employment in Kirriemuir was from weaving. The town is also famous as the birthplace of JM Barrie, creator of Peter Pan, as well as for its red sandstone buildings. Rural employment was found on local farms and estates. |

Contemporary employment is still found in weaving with J and D Wilkie, agriculture with Kinnordy and Airlie Estates and farms, motor transportation of Richard Lawson Car Transporters and service industries. The local Secondary School is Webster’s High School and this has over 750 pupils. The Primary Schools of the Parish are Northmuir and Cortachy. Also a fair number of inhabitants commute to Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen and beyond. There is a prosperous feel to the town and the surrounding district and there is a unique quality of life that has a sense of community at its core. It is quite common to travel through the area and constantly meet people you know. In Religious terms, the area has a history stretching back to the very roots of Christianity in Scotland. Today, the membership of the Church is representative of all sections of the local community and is currently in a very healthy state. Visitors are warmly welcomed into the fold of the Congregation and if you are in the area, please accept this invitation to visit our Sanctuaries and join one of the Sunday Services.
